Our Story
The Whims were founded in the winter of 1947 when several friends who were together after choir practice decided to go caroling through the campus, though their voices were already hoarse from singing. The young women became immediately enthusiastic about the possibility of assembling as a group. After some coaching from Mrs. Sprague, the wife of Wheaton College chaplain Dr. Sprague, the intimate group of talented friends were prepared to continue on their own. Realizing their group lacked identity, Sue Bovington - one of the group's founders - came forward with the name "The Whims." For it was on a whim that these young women were united.
Since their first moments on stage, the Whims have developed musically. Their repertoire has always been eclectic, consisting of barber-shop style songs, jazz tunes, and popular favorites. Even today, the Whims continue to perform songs like "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Baby I'm Yours", which were incorporated into their repertoire in the mid-1970's.
For about 15 years, the Whims traveled to Florida annually during their spring break. The mayor of Miami named the Whims instant citizens during their tour of Florida in 1967. His wife, Patty Roosevelt, said that "they were the nicest things to hit Miami Beach since Jackie Gleason rode at high noon four years ago". In addition to performing for the mayor of Miami, the Whims also performed at the opening of the original Disney World in 1971.
Though the Whims have not traveled to Florida in a long time, road trips are still common. The Whims travel throughout the Northeast singing at private events and other colleges.
